A new 8500 square foot mixed-use building forms a key addition to the historic downtown core in the town of Dundas. The project is significant because it not only introduces a challenge to address the main historical street, but also the corner. Visibility triangle requirements were developed into an opportunity to create an outdoor space into the public realm. The neighbouring environment formed the inspiration by which to integrate the new built form. Material character such as red brick tie into the local vernacular and historic nature of the surroundings, while aluminum panels highlight its 21st century construction; thus, forming a complimentary cohesive end result. The mixed use building program is commercial/retail with second storey office space. The building’s primary tenants at ground level are the Starbucks Coffee Company and the First Ontario Credit Union.

Marylake LTC

St. Rita Marylake Long Term Care is a 3 storey 128 bed facility, which overlooks Mary Lake. Designed as addition to Our Lady of Grace Shrine, the LTC has a walkout basement level dedicated to the Priests who live on site.

Winterberry Office

Recipient of the 2013 peoples choice award, the Winterberry Office can be found in Stoney Creek, within the Heritage Greene development. Being 3 storeys and 45, 000 square feet this office building addresses the corner of the 24.6 Ha development through its massing, façade elements, and setbacks, forming a key gateway building to the larger development. The building currently holds 2 restaurants, some commercial spaces at grade and offices above.

Valentinos Interior

A new 4000 square foot flagship location for a local restaurant chain located in the Winterberry Office Building at Heritage Greene. Working closely with the owners, special attention was paid to the spatial and programmatic requirements, as well as, the detailing of finishes. We aided in redefining the restaurant branding and carried out all coordination of approvals, construction documents, interior design, millwork design and contract administration.

St Lawrence School Addition

This addition/renovation project in the North-end of Hamilton forms an integral part of the neighbourhood and City. It became important for our office to provide a building that could address the community street face and have the ability to bring new life and revitalize the neighbourhood. While the new gym massing provided a vaulted space on the school interior it also related to the existing residential street-scape by meeting the existing pedestrian sidewalk and integrating a new School bus layby area. The large scale mass of the building was adequately scaled to relate to the urban fabric and pedestrians by its use of diverse materials and specific placement of stone elements. Our sensitive response to the site integrated an outdoor classroom with plantings to allow active participation from students. The Ontario Eco Schools initiative, granted the school a “Silver” certification for our efforts.

St Ann Catholic Elementary School

The new 50,000 square foot St. Ann Catholic Elementary School situated in the Barton & Sherman neighbourhood east of the downtown core, brings together three school communities under one roof through a school consolidation initiative. The Barton & Sherman neighbourhood is one of Hamilton’s oldest neighbourhoods and remains the first home for most immigrant families. The Catholic School board in Hamilton is committed to rebuilding their schools in the urban core and providing equal opportunities to all of their student body regardless of their economic state. Our approach was to create a bright and inviting building to stimulate the senses and give a child an opportunity to look forward to attending school.

Lakeview Residence

This waterfront residence is an infill project located in Stoney Creek with frontage onto Lake Ontario. In keeping with the existing built form of the neighbourhood, the structure is nestled into the existing urban fabric. Alignment with its neighbouring properties became a key driver and massing was varied to adjust to its contextual landscape.

Features of this residence include: maximized glazing and openings to offer interior views and increased outdoor flow, extended overhands providing summer shading and specific materials that were locally selected and produced. The front entry garden walls are extended to offer an inciting gesture to the neighbourhood.
